What Our Residents Say

My wife, Judi, and I moved to Evelyn House, during the middle of the Covid
epidemic, when it became clear she needed a caring environment to cope
with her increasing dementia. My experience of Evelyn House is one of
caring in all areas of life.
Judi passed away just over a year ago. At that time I considered moving
back to Pietermaritzburg. I am grateful to the senior nursing sister for her
advice to stay on until I had recovered from the deep loss.
That year gave me the chance to observe the outstanding depth of care I
experienced from the staff in all areas of the home.
By the staff I mean the management, the supervisors and particularly the
hands-on workers in the home. When I realized the quality of the staff
ability and caring attitude, it was easy for me to decide to stay on here.
While Judi was in the Frail Care unit, I was continually aware of the
personal caring ability of each person in that unit. Each person showed
amazing care and empathy in that sad situation.
After injuring my knees, I spent time in Frail Care, and I was overwhelmed
by the ability of staff to care so sensitively.
In the kitchen, with the leading of the Catering Manager and two
exceptional chefs, the meals have always been nourishing and tasty, but
served with such kindness and patience, often with a great sense of
humour!
Then the domestic service in rooms is where one sees helpful caring and
personal attention. This team of cleaning, caring, personal advice, solving
of residents’ problems, is the unsung team of women who look after the
residents.
And then there is the unsung heroines in the laundry who continue each
day to launder bag loads of clothing and linen for the residents, and return
them clean and ironed.
My experience of living at Evelyn House, is made homely and healthy by
the caring staff and those who manage the working of a home for the aged,
with such care and kindness. Without their excellent leadership, none of the
above could be possible.
